Leo Songs From Musicals

Leo

Sign of fire ruled by the sun, which makes the natives healthy, beautiful, charismatic, full of life, exuberant and communicative. It also motivates them to take risk. They are dignified, loyal and stable, extroverted and very generous. Leo enjoys adventure, luxury and convenience. They are naive at times.

"Roxie"
Chicago
(Kander/Ebb)

"The name on everybody's lips
Is gonna be Roxie
The lady raking in the chips
Is gonna be Roxie
I'm gonna be a celebrity
That means
Somebody everyone knows
The're gonna recognize my eyes
My hair, my teeth, my boobs, my nose"
Chicago, based on real life criminals, was the first musical of Kander and Ebb shortly since the success of Cabaret in cinema. It premiered in 1975, directed by Bob Fosse and starring Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon and Jerry Orbach. It is one of several musicals to make success both on stage and on screen, but one of the rare to win the Oscar for best picture, along with West Side Story, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and Oliver!. In the song Roxie, intoxicated with the popularity that prison has brought her, Roxie Hart already dreams of all the success she will have on stage as soon as she gets out of jail.

Their attitudes usually tend to be dramatic. Leos are steadily moving toward success, and are content only with glory. They can surpass themselves, and their goals are high. They are always involved in projects of great size, artistic or for public display, which are almost always recognized with praise or prizes.

Gypsy is considered by many experts as the greatest musical of American theater. The story is based on the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, but focused on her overbearing stage mother, Rose, who obsessively uses Gypsy and her sister June Havoc to fulfill her own dreams of stardom. The character was written for Ethel Merman in 1959, and it has been played by several other respected actresses like Angela Lansbury, Patti Lupone and Bernadette Peters. It was adapted for the screen in 1962 and for TV in 1993 with Bette Midler. Rose's Turn is one of several songs of the musical that became standards of the popular music, where Rose yearns for the applauses that she always dreamed of.

"Rose's Turn"
Gypsy
(Styne/Sondheim)

"You either got it, or you ain't
And, boys, I got it!
(...)
Starting now it's gonna be my turn
Gangway, world, get off of my runway!
Starting now I bat a thousand!
This time, boys, I'm taking the bows
And everything's coming up roses
This time for me"

Leo's got a leader spirit and always stand in the spotlight. They can be ambitious and proud, always aware of their merits but almost never of their limits. They may also be arrogant, vain, cruel, and pretentious.

"C'est Moi"
Camelot
(Lerner/Loewe)

"The angels have chose
To fight their battles below
And here I stand
As pure as a prayer
Incredibly clean
With virtue to spare
The godliest man I know!
C'est moi!
C'est moi!
C'est moi!"

In 1960 Camelot took to Broadway the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, with songs by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. It was a success and swiped awards. In 1967 it  got a film version starring Richard Burton, Franco Nero and Julie Andrews. Since then, Camelot has gained several other adaptations in diverse medias. In C'est Moi, Lancelot demonstrates all his self-confidence as one of the king's knights.

On the bright side, Leo is generous, kind, faithful and caring. Enthusiastic and understanding with others. A Leo likes children, theater and partying. Leo does not like vulgarity and daily life. They like music, movies, ballads, big concerts, operas and romantic songs.

West Side Story, is one of the most iconic works of musical theater. An adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet using as background the New York City from the early 20th century, the intolerance between whites and Hispanics, and the violence of street gangs. Massive success on stage, it was soon adapted for the screen and became also one of the mopst awarded films at the Oscars in history. Several songs, composed by the legendary Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, became standards of the popular music, such as Tonight, Maria, Somewhere and America. In I Feel Pretty, Maria is filled with excitement as she gets dressed to see Tony.

"I Feel Pretty"
West Side Story
(Bernstein/Sondheim)

"I feel pretty
Oh, so pretty
I feel pretty and witty and gay!
And I pity
Any girl who isn't me tonight
I feel charming
Oh, so charming
It's alarming how charming I feel!
And so pretty
That I hardly can believe I'm real”

Idealists, creative, proud, Leos recognize the good side of people and are usually great friends. They keep away from selfish and malicious people and don't like safety. Leos love to conquer. Of all the astrology signs, it is the most insistent. The tougher to conquer, the harder they fall in love.

"Elephant Love Medley"
Moulin Rouge
(Various)

"Christian: We should be lovers

Satine: We can't do that

Christian: We should be lovers
And that's a fact

Satine: Though nothing
Can keep us together

Christian: We can steal time
Just for one day
Specially written for the screen by Australian director Baz Luhrmann, Moulin Rouge stars Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman and crowded theaters all over the world in 2001. Its script is a pastiche inspired by Indian Bollywood musicals, The Lady of Camellias, La Traviata and even the Greek tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice. The film was nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress, winning for Costume Design and Art Direction. Most of the songs are collections of references from several pop culture and entertainment classics, including the Elephant Love Medley, where Christian flirts with Satine tirelessly, as she tries to resist his charms.

On the dark side, Leo is arrogant and bossy. He may be intolerant and dogmatic. It tends to interfere when it should not.

One quality: kindness
One flaw: egocentrism

Fame is a 1980 musical drama directed by Alan Parker about the lives of young artists entering the New York School of Performing Arts from their admission tests to graduation. A box office success, Fame spawned a TV series, a Broadway musical and an unsuccessful film remake in 2009. The soundtrack was also very successful and had several hits in the charts. It was the first film to have two Academy Award nominated songs, Fame and Out Here On My Own, both performed by Irene Cara, who became one of the most popular pop singers of the 1980s.

"Hello, Dolly!"
Hello, Dolly!
(Jerry Herrman)

"Oh, hello Dolly
Well, hello Dolly
It's so nice to have you back
Where you belong
You're lookin' swell, Dolly
I can tell, Dolly
You're still glowin'
You're still crowin'
You're still goin' strong"

Hello, Dolly! is a 1964 Broadway musical starring Carol Channing, which broke all the records of the time. The story is about a matchmaker who looks for a wife for a grumpy millionaire. It won 10 Tony awards, a record surpassed only by The Producers in 2001. It was adapted for screen by Gene Kelly in 1969 starring Barbra Streisand. Despite being one of the biggest box office successes of the year, the film nevertheless failed to earn back the money invested, one of the reasons why Hollywood stopped investing on big Broadway shows for decades. The title song became one of Louis Armstrong's signature songs, as well as a pop music standard.

In the land of the blind who has an eye is king.

"There is only one thing worse in the world than being the subject of talk: it is not being."
—Oscar Wilde

Smash is a TV show about the troubled production of Bombshell, a Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe, and two young actresses competitng for the leading role. Although it was a big budget Spielberg production with big names in the cast, it did not obtain as much success as Glee, which had more appeal over younger audiences. In the attempt to conquer this demographic, the second season brought new characters and a second plot, which not only didn't conquer the new audience but pushed away the audience it already had, bringing the show to an end. Unlike Glee, most of Smash's songs are original, like Let Me Be Your Star, its theme song.

"Fade in on a girl
With a hunger for fame
With a face
And a name
To remember”
