Gemini Songs From Musicals

Gemini

Sign of Air, ruled by Mercury, which confers intelligence, versatility, mental agility, sociability, great persuasion power. Gemini doesn't like loneliness, feeling limited or tied to a situation or place. They adapt easily to any type of environment or person. This makes them able to live several experiences at the same time, taking advantage of them all. Geminis are often shallow and inconstant. They enjoy infrequent and novelty. The more variety in their lives, the better.

Throroughly Modern Millie is a 1967 musical comedy film starring Julie Andrews, Carol Channing and Mary Tyler Moore, which was adapted to the Broadway stage in 2000, with Sutton Foster in the lead role. The story of a young country girl who seeks to marry for money and live a glamorous life in the 1920s New York City was a hit and collected many awards. In What Do I Need With Love?, Jimmy tries to resist his feelings for Millie, once they conflict with his bohemian and uncompromising life.

"What Do I Need With Love?"
Thoroughly Modern Millie (Tesori/Scanlan)

"All the places I would like to show you
Although I hardly know you
I have a funny feeling
We’d make a perfect pair
(...)
Wait a minute! Just a minute!
No! No! No! No!
I’m a Joe with just one aim
Every night to date a different dame
Call each one of them the same pet name
‘Hey, baby’"

The people of Gemini are naturally restless and curious, always very communicative. They are very concerned with intellectual activities, and they seek out equally intelligent friends.
Gemini likes to talk, read, do many things at the same time.

"My New Philosophy"
You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (Clark Gesner)

"Just like a busy bee
Each new philosophy
Can fly from tree to tree
And keep it moving
When life's a dizzy maze
On alternating days
I choose a different phrase
(...)
My new philosophy!"
In 1998, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown returned to Broadway with considerable changes. New songs and arrangements were introduced and the character Patty was replaced by Sally Brown, Charlie's sister, a breakthrough role for Kristin Chenoweth, which gave her a Tony award for best supporting actress. In My New Philosophy, one of the new songs, Sally rebels against her teacher for getting an F, and decides to change her life "philosophy".

Geminis are individuals who, for the most part, have a difficult, unstable and double personality. They are not sure what they want for their lives, especially about love. They are seductive and can hardly get by without seducing others, which may be the main focus of relationship problems they constantly face.

Unapalogetic bachelor and unable to commit himself to a serious relationship, Bobby receives five friend couples on his 35th birthday, who  reminisce about various episodes of their and Bobby's lives. This would be a tagline for Company, the 1970s Stephen Sondheim musical comedy. On You Can Drive a Person Crazy, three of Bobby's ill-fated flings sing about how they are charmed by his charm, but also deceived by his volubility and disengagement.

"You Can Drive a Person Crazy"
Company
(Sondheim)

"You could drive a person buggy
You could blow a person's cool
Like you make a person feel all huggy
While you make her feel a fool (...)
Exclusive you! Elusive you!
Will any person ever get the juice of you?
You're crazy
You're a lovely person
You're a moving
Deeply malajusted
Never to be trusted
Crazy person yourself"

On the bright side, Geminis are adaptable and versatile. They are intellectuals, eloquent, affectionate, communicative and intelligent. They have a lot of energy and vitality. Boredom is their biggest enemy, and lack of activity often annoys them. Curious by nature, the people of Gemini like to experience and know a little about everything. Youthful, they rarely mature, although they are able to fully understand the complexity of situations.

"Bouncing off The Walls"
Spider-Man: Turning Off The Dark (Bono/The Edge)

"I can't get down
I woke up on the roof again
(...)
And I feel it in my veins
It's a feeling I can't tame
Can anyone please explain why
I'm bouncing off the walls”
Bono and The Edge from U2 boarded on the idea of turning the superhero comic book into a Broadway show. The musical was the most expensive musical ever produced on Broadway and was surrounded by controversy even before its debut, due to the various accidents suffered by the cast during rehearsals. In Bouncing Off The Walls, Peter has just discovered his super powers and goes on to explore them around before even taking on the Spider-Man alter-ego.

Gemini doesn't enjoy formal education, but doesn't like being mentally inactive either. They tend to nervousness and tension and can be calculating and demanding. Sometimes they may be too sincere and indiscreet, unstable.

Evita, the biography of Argentine first lady Eva Perón, is now one of the most iconic musicals of all time. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's fourth musical together, it was a resounding success around the world, and turned Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin into Broadway stars. The 2012 Broadway revival had Ricky Martin as Che. In 1996 the musical gained a film adaptation by Alan Parker, who directed Fame and The Midnight Express, with Madonna and Antonio Banderas in the leads. In Oh What A Circus, an acid and overly rational Che Guevara ignores Eva's death and the mourning of the millions of Argentines.

"Oh What a Circus"
Evita
(Webber/Rice)

"Instead of government we had a stage
Instead of ideas, a prima donna's rage
Instead of help we were given a crowd
She didn't say much, but she said it loud

Sing you fools, but you got it wrong
Enjoy your prayers
Because you haven't got long
Your queen is dead, your king is through
She's not coming back to you"

They are cheerful, enthusiastic, communicative, eloquent, have a facility for learning and teaching. They are interested in events of various types - music in general - activities in education, commerce, communication.

One quality: Intelligence
One flaw: Instability

Quotes and Sayings

"Love is born of curiosity and endures through habit."
—M. Bontempelli
Better to ask the way than go astray.

"Stayin' Alive"
Saturday Night Fever
(Gibb Brothers)

"Whether you're a brother
Or whether you're a mother
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive
Feel the city breakin'
And everybody shakin'
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive"

The "New Hollywood," which transformed the language and subject matters of American films in the late 1960s, caused the end of grand and feel-good Broadway shows. The genre only enjoyed the same success again in 1977, disguised as Saturday Night Fever, a film that marked an era. The musical numbers were no more a way for characters to express themselves. It inspired the creation of music videos and the rise to MTV. The film approached the success of disco music, and explicitly addressed taboo themes at the time, a trademark of this new wave of cinema. John Travolta turned into a star, and its soundtrack, written mostly by the Bee Gees, was for long the best-seller of all time.

"I think therefore I am."Descartes

Do not follow me, I may change my destination at any time.

Self-described "a rock & roll fable", Streets of Fire is 1984 film about a bounty hunter who returns to his city to rescue his rockstar girlfriend, who was kidnapped by a gang. The cast includes well-known names today such as Rick Moranis, Diane Lane, Michael Paré and Willem Dafoe. Its confusing plot, poor directing and acting made it a major critics and box office failure. The soundtrack was relatively successful, makng Dan Hartman's I Can Dream About You a hit in worldwide charts. The film ended up gaining cult following over time, due to its soundtrack, TV reruns and VHS rentals.

"Nowhere Fast"
Streets of Fire
(Jim Steinman)

"You've got so many dreams
That you don't know where to put 'em
So you'd better turn a few of 'em loose
Your body's got a feeling
That it's starting to rust
You'd better rev it up
And put it to use."

One eye up the chimney.

"A day without laughter is a wasted day."

Charlie Chaplin

"Maniac"
Flashdance
(Michael Sembello)

"Locking rhythms to the beat of her heart
Changing woman into life
She has danced into the danger zone
When a dancer becomes a dance
(...)
She's a maniac,
Maniac on the floor
And she's dancing like
She's never danced before”

Flashdance was released in 1983 with heavy MTV and Saturday Night Fever influence. The weak plot of a daytime laborer and exotic dancer by night was more of an excuse to make a feature packed with themed music videos. It was a critics failure but a success with audiences. The soundtrack featured several songs composed by Giorgio Moroder and was also a hit, earning a Grammy and an Oscar for the title song. The film was turned into a stage musical in 2008 in the West End, but never made its Broadway debut.
