Capricorn Songs From Musicals

  Capricorn

Earth sign, ruled by Saturn, which gives solidity, ambition and caution. Capricorns make plans, and have the patience to let them ripen. Bold and objective, they face difficult situations with diplomacy. Capricorn doesn't like impractical plans, fancy, frivolous people, the ridicule. They are persistent, and do not give up until they achieve their goals.

"The Impossible Dream"
Man of La Mancha
(Mitch Leigh/Joe Darion)

"This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far
To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into hell
For a heavenly cause"
Man of La Mancha is a 1964 stage musical written by Dale Wasserman. It's a play within a play, and it shows Miguel de Cervantes, stuck in a dungeon by the Spanish Inquisition waiting for his trial, staging along with the other prisoners Don Quixote de La Mancha, his most famous work. Man of La Mancha won several Tonys, including best musical and its film version starred Peter O'Toole and Sophia Loren. The Impossible Dream is one of the most recorded musical theater tunes by popular singers, with versions done by singers like Frank Sinatra, Cher, Roberta Flack and Elvis Presley.

On the bright side, a Capricorn is ambitious and disciplined.
Capricorn likes reliability, professionalism, a solid foundation, having a goal, leadership.

The history of medieval royalty inspired Stephen Schwartz to create Pippin, about Pippin, the Hunchback, son of Charlemagne, king of France. With book by Roger O. Hirson, it tells Pippin's fictitious quest fora purpose in life, narrated by a mysterious circus troupe. Corner of The Sky is one of the show's showstoppers, and was recorded by the Jackson 5. The musical opened in 1972 on Broadway, directed by Bob Fosse, and had its first revival in 2013. As of 2016, there have been plans in place by Miramax to take it to the screen.

"Corner of The Sky"
Pippin
(Schwartz)

"So many men seem destined
To settle for something small
But I won't rest
Until I know I have it all
(...)
River belong where they can ramble
Eagles belong where they can fly
I've got to be
Where my spirit can run free
Gotta fin my corner of the sky"

They may be distrustful, especially in their love lives, but they are very faithful and protective, and trustworthy. This trait can make them a bit lonely. They put the love life in the background, paying special attention to professional interests, or to things that validates their prestige.

"If I Were A Rich Man"
Fiddler on The Roof
(Bock/Harnick)

"Dear God,
You made many, many poor people
I realize, of course
That it's no shame to be poor
But it's no great honor either
So what would have been so terrible
If I had a small fortune?”
Fiddler on The Roof is a 1964 musical that tells the story of Tevye, father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish traditions as foreign cultures surround and influence his family life. It was a great box-office and critics success, as well as its 1971 film adaptation. In If I Were Rich Man, Tevye dreams of fortune and glory, one of the show's most popular songs, which was composed with typically Jewish chords.

Capricorn tends to be pessimistic, and in difficult situations it is somewhat fatalistic. Sometimes they do not mind going over people in their professional and social pursuit. Sometimes it costs them to be generous and to do favors in an altruistic way.

Chicago shows a whole pack of deadly sins, such as envy, pride, gluttony. In All I Care About we are introduced to greedy lawyer Billy Flynn, who manipulates the media by turning his murderous clients into victims of compassionate circumstances, elevating them to star status. All that in exchange for an expensive fee. Billy's role was originally played by Jerry Orbach, who also plays the voice of Lumière in Beauty and the Beast. Richard Gere took the role in the film adaptation.

"All I Care About"
Chicago
(Kander/Ebb)

"I don’t care about expensive things
Cashmere coats
Diamond rings
Don’t mean a thing
All I care about is love
That’s what I’m here for"

Capricorn has a good sense of humor, but is reserved. They are practical, prudent, patient and are cautious when necessary. They are neither adept of intense social life nor very communicative, however they have great trade and finance abilities.

"Money"
Cabaret
(Kander/Ebb)

"Money makes the world go around
The world go around
The world go around
Money makes the world go around
It makes the world go 'round.
A mark, a yen, a buck, or a pound
A buck or a pound
A buck or a pound
Is all that makes the world go around
That clinking clanking sound
Can make the world go 'round"
Fosse's theatrical version of the Cabaret extended the plot and created a narrative that expanded the Kit Kat Club domains, a feature that was later adopted by Milos Forman in his film version of Hair. This allowed several new songs to be written especially for the film by composers Kander and Ebb, such as Maybe This Time and Money. Following the movie's success, which swept the 1973 Oscars, but ended up losing the best picture award for The Godfather, the new songs were all added into all the following stage revivals.

They are modest, reserved, quiet, practical and economical. They like antiques and serious, well-crafted music such as classic music. They prefer a quiet and modest life.

One quality: Tact
One flaw: Melancholy

"Part of Your World"

"I've got gadgets and gizmos aplenty
I've got whooz-its and whatz-its galore
You want thingamabobs?
I got twenty
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more ”

The Little Mermaid was the 1989 animation in which Disney resumed its production of fairytale princess stories after releasing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty many decades earlier. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale, The Little Mermaid tells the story of Ariel, a mermaid obsessed with human culture who falls in love with a prince and gives her voice to a witch in exchange for becoming a human. A critics and box office success, the film won two Oscars, and went to Broadway in 2007. In Part of That World, Ariel expresses all her ambition to live in the human world.

Good things come to those who wait.

"If you find an unhindered path, it probably leads nowhere."
Frank Clark

Jekyll and Hyde is the 1990 adaptation of the famous horror book Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It opened on Broadway in 1997. The musical was not exactly a success, and did not profit. In 2013 a revival hit Broadway for a short season. This is The Moment is the song in which Dr. Jekyll is about to test his formula on himself, but the experiment in fact goes wrong and he develops another macabre personality.

"This is The Moment"
Jekyll & Hyde
(Frank Wildhorn/Leslie Bricusse)

"For all these years
I've faced the world alone
And now the time has come
To prove to them
I've made it on my own"
