The Princess and
the Frog is a 2009 Disney animation that marks the introduction of the
studio's first (and late) black princess. The story is
based on the Grimm brothers tale The Frog Prince and is set in New
Orleans, where hard-working Tiana dreams of owning her own restaurant. After
kissing a prince who has been turned into a frog by a sorcerer, Tiana
also becomes a frog and they have to find a way back to being human
before it's too late. The soundtrack features original songs by Randy Newman, all in the traditional New Orleans jazz style. Almost There was nominated for an Oscar, and shows Tiana's focus on achieving her goals. |
"Almost There" The Princess and The Frog (Newman) "Ain't got time for messing around And it's not my style This old town can slow it down People taking the easy way I know exactly where I'm going I'm getting closer and closer everyday And I'm almost there" |

"You never know how strong you are. Until your only alternative is to be strong."

"Shy" Once Upon a Mattress (Mary Rodgers/Marshall Barer) "Someone's being bashful That's no way to be Not with me Can't you see That I am just as embarassed as you And I can understand your point of view I've always been shy I confess that I'm shy Can't you guess that this confident air Is a mask that I wear 'Cause I'm shy?” |
The musical Once
Upon A Mattress debuted on Broadway in 1959, a free adaptation of Hans
Christian Andersen's The Princess and the Pea. The
story is about an evil queen who enforces a law that no
one in the kingdom can marry while the prince does not find a princess to
marry, but she rejects all the princesses who appear. The musical received average reviews, but it was a hit with audiences. In
Shy, the ill-mannered and flamboyant Princess Winnifred makes an entrance by climbing the castle's wall, and then looks for the prince around the kingdom, charming everyone except the queen. |
Nobody died of hard work.
