"Out Tonight" Rent (Jonathan Larson) "What's the time? Well it's gotta be close to midnight My body's talking to me It says, 'Time for danger' It says 'I wanna commit a crime Wanna be the cause of a fight Wanna put on a tight skirt And flirt with a stranger'" |
Jonathan Larson was
inspired by Puccini's La Bohème to write Rent, a rock opera about starving artists struggling for opportunities and paying
the bills in New York City during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Rent
debuted in 1996 both off-Broadway and Broadway, and was a resounding
success for audiences and critics, winning awards such as the Tony for best
musical and the Pulitzer prize. Unfortunately Larson died
abruptly one day before the off-Broadway premiere and did
not even witness the success of his work. |
They are interested in tourism, travel, adventures, community affairs, politics, religion, commerce, sports, and love challenges. Sagittarians like freedom, law, and the ability to understand. They can be shallow, careless and restless. They don't tolerate feeling trapped in a situation, and worrying about details.
Despite the big names
involved, Chicago was overshadowed by A Chorus Line in 1975. Fosse's directing, which often broke the fourth wall, made audiences uncomfortable. The show was about to close when Gwen Verdon had to undergo surgery after swallowing a
feather during a performance, but Liza Minnelli offered to fil in for a
month, which boosted the show's popularity. The 1996 revival starring Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth achieved more success, winning 6 Tony awards, spawning a film version, and hasn't finished its run. |
Chicago (Kander/Ebb) "Start the car I know a whoopee spot Where the gin is cold But the piano's hot It's just a noisy hall Where there's a nightly brawl And all that jazz" |
Space and movement are essential for their physical and mental balance, and they must always preserve their independence. Kindness and generosity are hallmarks of Sagittarius. They have good-natured personalities. They love parties and they are usually good people.
"Cabaret" Cabaret (Kander/Ebb) "What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play Life is a Cabaret, old chum Come to the Cabaret (...) Come taste the wine Come hear the band Come blow your horn Start celebrating Right this way Your table's waiting" |
In Goodbye to Berlin,
Christopher Isherwood created short stories based on his experiences in
Berlin in the 1930s during the rise of Nazi Party in Germany. His
memoirs soon spawned a number of adaptations, including Cabaret, the
musical about the Kit Kat Club, a cabaret where American singer Sally Bowles
performed. With songs by Kander and Ebb and the
directed by Fosse, Cabaret opened on Broadway in 1966. In 1972, Fosse
himself took Cabaret to the screen, with significant changes in the plot. Starring Liza Minnelli and Joel Gray, Cabaret was one of the first Hollywood films to speak openly about subjects such as abortion and homosexuality.

Sometimes they are inconstant, and they tend to be interested in various subjects or activities, without going into any depths. On the bright side, they are intellectuals, honest, sincere and friendly. They are characterized by their optimism, modesty and good humor.
In 1957, Elvis Presley was recruited by the American army, and ended up taking a 2 -year hiatus in his career. This
unlikely event led composers Lee Adams and Charles Strouse and playwright Michael
Stewart to write Bye Bye Birdie, a satirical musical comedy starring
Dick Van Dyke and Chita Rivera. The musical opened in 1960, had a film version in 1963 and a TV movie in 1995, as well as several other theater adaptations. Put On a Happy Face was recorded later by several crooners, such as Tony Bennett.

"Put On A Happy Face" Bye Bye Birdie (Strouse/Adams) "I know a girl so gloomy She never laugh or sing She wouldn't listen to me Now she's a mean old thing So spread sunshine all over the place And put on a happy face” |
Sagittarians are intelligent, of brilliant reasoning, deep and logical. They teach and learn with equal ease. Very intuitive and diplomatic, they are great at dealing with risk situations. They are so optimistic that sometimes they become irresponsible.
"Always Look on The Bright Side of Life" Spamalot (Eric Idle) "Life's a piece of shit When you look at it Life's a laugh And death's a joke, it's true You'll see it's all a show Keep'em laughing as you go Just remember that The last laugh is on you" |
Monty Python's
1975 film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail was turned into Spamalot, the stage musical in
which the group pokes fun on King Arthur's legend. Always Look On The Bright Side of Life is a
song used in the final scene of their film The Life of
Brian, and became so associated with the group, and in British pop culture, that it had
to be included in Spamalot as well. Spamalot starred
Tim Curry and Sarah Ramirez (from Grey's Anatomy), and was directed by acclaimed director Mike Nichols. It won 3
Tony awards in 2005.

Quotes and Sayings
What you see is what you get.
After a storm comes a calm.
Elvis Presley was a forerunner and perhaps the first big rockstar. His
career was not only marked by the success in the music charts, but also by
the several movie musicals that he starred, many of them having
Hawaii as a background. Jailhouse Rock, 1957, is his third film,
about a young man convicted of manslaughter who develops in prison his
musical abilities. Upon his release, he becomes a music star, but his egocentric personality begins to affect his career. Jerry
Lieber and Mike Stoller composed Jailhouse Rock and several of the
first rock hits, which later originated the musical Smokey Joe's Cafe, which opened on Broadway in 1995. |
Jailhouse Rock (Lieber/Stoller) "The warden threw a party in the county jail The prison band was there And they began to wail The band was jumpin' And the joint began to swing You should've heard Those knocked out jailbirds sing Let's rock Everybody, let's rock Everybody in the whole cell block Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock" |
A blessing in disguise.
"The one I love, I want you to be free. Even from me. "
—Anne Morrow Lindbergh
"Footloose" Footloose (Kenny Loggins/Dean Pitchford) "Been working so hard I'm punching my card Eight hours for what? Oh, tell me what I got I've got this feeling That time's just holding me down I'll hit the ceiling Or else I'll tear up this town" |
One of the biggest box-office hits of 1984 was Footloose, one of the many 1980s film musicals that copied Saturday Night Fever's structure, which brought fame to Kevin Bacon and Sarah Jessica Parker. The plot is
about a Chicago teenager who moves to a small town in Utah, where dancing and secular music were banned by the local preacher. The
soundtrack was also a hit, and all nine tracks entered the American music charts, with two of them reaching number 1, as well as being
nominated for a best original song Oscar. Footloose's stage version opened on Broadway in 1998 to a lesser success.

Guys & Dolls is a 1950s
musical that won not only the Tony for best musical, but was also the
Pulitzer Prize, although it never received the prize due to McCarthyism policies. The
story is about a casino gambler who is challenged to take a missionary
grimace to Havana in exchange for gambling funding, but he falls in love
with her. The musical was adapted for the screen in 1955, starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. In Luck Be a Lady, Sky
Masterson is hoping to win a bet in the game, which will decide
whether he will save his relationship with the woman of his dreams.
